Less than a year ago, I
was on my way to volunteer for Magen David Adom. Getting off the plane in Tel
Aviv, I was a little nervous, since I did not know a person in Israel, and I knew even less about the Magen
David Adom ambulance service. However, the moment Yochai introduced himself to
me, I felt comfortable. He was so reassuring and enthusiastic about the
program ... how could I not be excited as well? The next 3
months, I saw things and I experienced emotions that I never knew I would. Yochai
was there every step of the way. He taught us first aid, took us touring around
Israel, and was among the first one's to support and
comfort us when tragedy struck.
Yochai was not only a
friend to me, but a role model. From him, I learned so much about the important
things in life. He lived everyday to the fullest...a smiley,
energetic, and colorful character who was more dedicated to saving lives
and helping other people than anyone I have ever met. Although somewhat
controversial, Yochai spoke straight from the heart, and was always willing to
go out of his way to help out his students. Yochai may not have been a very
religious person, but he spent every day of his life carrying out mitzvoth. I
only hope that I can do half as many good things in my lifetime, as he did
in 26 years.
From the many newspaper
articles about him and memorial services that are occurring through out the
world for Yochai, I can see that he had just as large of an impact upon other
people as he did to me. He was a great friend, I miss him, and I will
always remember him!
